Addressing mental health in prisons: if not now, when? If not us, who?
Mental health challenges are increasing and with the pandemics the cases may be insurmountable. Prisons in Zimbabwe are handling increased cases of mental health and yet they are ill equipped for the challenge. The national health priorities are elsewhere. This policy brief acts as an exemplar highlighting the need for policymakers to priorities mental health and take adequate steps during the prisons and correctional services reforms that ensure that mental health is covered for the good of the inmate and the officer. RAU, in a public discussion in Masvingo in February 2020, gathered that mental health in prison inmates is in crisis and there is an urgent need for attention.
